Unlock the potential of ancillary services.

Your power, your profit.

Make money from flexibility! Ancillary services mean additional income, better energy prices, a stable grid and fewer power cuts.

What are Ancillary services?

Ancillary services include a variety of activities that help transmission system operators (TSOs) ensure the stability and reliability of the power grid, which is essential for the continuous supply of electricity to all consumers.

The most common balancing services are sometimes referred to as frequency restoration services. They are particularly important for systems that integrate energy from renewable sources.

Who are Ancillary services for?

Energy generators

Ancillary services are an opportunity for renewable and combined heat and power (CHP) energy producers as well as for conventional sources.

Companies with energy storage

Energy storage systems are ideal for Ancillary services due to their short response times and ease of management.

Business energy consumers

Every business that can regulate its power consumption in real time has the opportunity to earn additional income through Ancillary services.

Benefits

Additional source of income for flexibility

Reduction of energy costs and better off-take prices for producers

Supporting the stability of the energy grid

How It Works

Becoming an Ancillary Services Provider

1. Declaration

We conduct an energy flexibility study to identify opportunities for you to provide ancillary services.

2. Registration

We connect your technology to our online system and register it in the TSO’s system for ancillary service providers.

3. Participation

We participate in the TSO’s ancillary services auctions on your behalf.

4. Energy adjustment

When requested by the TSO, we remotely adjust your technology’s power consumption or production, according to pre-agreed conditions.

5. Payment

You receive monthly payments based on periods of reservation and activation.

Examples of Annual Revenues for 1 MW of Flexible Power

Technology Estimated annual revenues before profit share
CHP (combined heat and power) 400 000 PLN
Boiler, biogas station, hydropower plant 400 000 PLN
Solar PV installation, wind power plant 50 000 PLN
Battery energy storage system 600 000 PLN

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the preparatory process take

After you decide to partner with us to become a service provider, we’ll begin the process of adminstration, technical set-up and registration with the TSO. The entire process will take around three months. Once complete, you’ll be ready to provide ancillary services.

Is there any risk for me as a provider?

No. Photon Energy is the official service provider for the TSO, and we do not pass any responsibilities onto our clients.

If you can’t deliver the energy adjustments as agreed in a given month, the monthly payment from the TSO might be reduced, but you won’t pay any penalties beyond that.

What is Reservation?

Providers are paid for maintaining available power reserves by keeping devices ready to adjust energy output or consumption when needed. When adjustment requests are received from the TSO, devices are controlled remotely by commands from Photon Energy.

What is Activation

Providers are paid for activating their power reserves by making actual adjustments to output or consumption. They are required to activate their reserves within a certain timeframe, according to their agreement. Depending on the type of balancing services provided, this could be 5 or 12.5 minutes.

What is auction?

TSOs procure power balancing services in auctions, and if they are delivered as agreed, service providers are paid for periods of reservation and activation.

Payment

  1. Payments are issued monthly by the TSO based on periods of reservation and activation.
  2. Depending on the arrangements of the profit-sharing agreement, a fixed percentage of the total remuneration is paid to the participants.
  3. The remainder represents the aggregator's remuneration.
